Patent Covers Cross-Zone High Availability and Automatic Failover for Mission-Critical Applications in the Public Cloud

HOUSTON–SoftNAS®, the #1 best-selling NAS in the cloud, today announced it was assigned patent 9,584,363 for Redundant Storage Solution. Organizations cannot tolerate storage and application downtime, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour in lost revenue. SoftNAS incorporates patented high availability storage management, so organizations can confidently migrate applications from on-premises storage to the public cloud with the high availability that is required for 24 x 7 x 365 mission-critical workloads and business applications. SoftNAS delivers on this promise by backing it up with its unique money-back No Storage Downtime Guarantee SLA.

As reported by Enterprise Management Associates December 2016 Impact Brief, “SoftNAS delivers a rich set of storage services including inline deduplication, compression, thin provisioning, snapshots, multi-level caching, clones, and others. The software-defined approach delivers consistency for services and management across all storage, regardless of the vendor or type. Customers are looking to move their large file-based repositories to the cloud. The number of potential situations where this flexibility can be leveraged for a business advantage is virtually endless, and is impossible to deliver with an on-premises infrastructure.”

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published an abstract of the patent stating: “Method and apparatus for switching between a first server and a second server, each located within a virtual private cloud and the first server being located within a first zone and the second server being located within a second zone that is physically separate from the first zone. The method and apparatus further configured to determine that the first server has experienced a failure to send or receive data. The method and apparatus further configured to enable a second port on the second server. The method and apparatus further configured to create a new route table at the second server and flush the previous route table. The method and apparatus further configured to transmit, via the second port, a request to a virtual private cloud controller to update an elastic internet protocol address with the second port information and receive data from the virtual private cloud controller.”

Eric Olson filed the patent application on November 11, 2013 (14/538,579).

“From our earliest days, SoftNAS achieved success by having an innovative, cloud first perspective on IT. Innovation is in our DNA. As we continue to migrate petabytes of hot and cold data to the cloud, cloud data protection without downtime remains a top business priority for us and our customers,” said Rick Braddy, CEO, CTO and Founder of SoftNAS. “This patent recognizes SoftNAS for its leadership, innovation and commitment to non-stop, mission-critical applications and workloads running in the cloud. While the patent is based upon our market-leading Cloud NAS product, it covers many cross-zone HA use cases within virtual private clouds, whereby private IP addresses are used to redirect network traffic to protect against failure events.”
